José Atarés Martínez was a prominent Aragonese politician and lawyer born on August 2, 1960, in Val Longuiello, Sierra d'Albarracín (Teruel). He was affiliated with the Popular Party and began his political career as a councilor in Zaragoza. In 1991, he became his party's spokesperson, and by 1995, he ascended to deputy mayor after Luisa Fernanda Rudi's electoral victory. Atarés served as mayor after Rudi's resignation in 2000, though he lost the subsequent elections in 2003 to the Socialists. He also held senatorial positions in the general elections of 2004 and 2008.
