José Carlos de Almeida Azevedo was a Brazilian military officer, physicist, and professor born on January 11, 1932, in Salvador. He graduated from the Naval School in Rio de Janeiro in 1954 and earned master's degrees in naval engineering, physics, and nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the USA. He achieved the rank of captain and served as the vice-rector and later as the rector of the University of Brasília from May 1976 until 1985, during which his administration faced significant student protests.
