José Donoso was a prominent Chilean novelist and short story writer born in Santiago in 1924. He struggled academically despite coming from a well-off family of doctors and lawyers. After various experiences in his youth, including working as a shepherd and a dockworker, he returned to Chile to finish high school and later studied English literature at the University of Chile. A scholarship to Princeton University opened doors for him in the literary and artistic scene. Upon returning to Chile, he became a teacher and contributed to various publications.
