José Israel Vargas is a Brazilian professor, academic, and chemist born on January 9, 1928, in Paracatu. He served as the Minister of Mines and Science during the presidencies of Collor, Itamar Franco, and Fernando Henrique Cardoso. Vargas was also the secretary of science for Minas Gerais under Aureliano Chaves. His career focused on the study of physical-chemical consequences of nuclear transformations in solids, hyperfine interactions, and planning and modeling of energy systems.
