He was a pioneering figure in researching natural alternatives to pesticides in Brazil, notably discovering the use of manipueira, the liquid byproduct from cassava flour production, as a natural substitute for pesticides to combat pests and diseases in crops. He served as an emeritus professor and was the founder and president of the Ceará Academy of Sciences until his death in Fortaleza on February 19, 2013.
