José Luis González was a prominent Puerto Rican essayist, novelist, short story writer, university professor, and journalist, born on March 8, 1926, and passing away on December 8, 1996. His pro-independence political views led him to live much of his life in exile in Mexico. He is recognized as one of the most significant Puerto Rican authors of the 20th century, with his notable work being 'Puerto Rico: The Four-Storeyed Country and Other Essays,' first published in Spanish in 1980.
