He began his professional career in 1942 with Machito's orchestra, contributing to over 300 recordings. Throughout his career, he performed with notable musicians like Stan Kenton and Dizzy Gillespie and toured extensively. Mangual's unique style and collaborations made him a prominent figure in Latin music. His only solo album, 'Buyú,' was released in 1977. He was a father to six children, including musicians José Jr. and Luis.
