José Maria de Abreu was a Brazilian composer, born on February 7, 1911, in Jacareí, São Paulo, and passed away on May 11, 1966, in Rio de Janeiro. He is popularly known as the King of the Waltz. Living most of his life in São Paulo, he learned music from his father and began recording his compositions in the late 1920s. He gained fame for his romantic classics from the 1930s, notably collaborating with Francisco Mattoso, and later with Jair Amorim, producing hits that became well-loved in Brazil.
