José María Riera de Leyva is a Spanish novelist born in 1934 in Almeria and raised in Barcelona. He studied architecture and journalism at university. Riera won the Premio Sésamo in 1959 but then took a nearly two-decade hiatus from writing. He returned with notable novels including 'Lejos de Marrakech' (1989) and 'Territorio enemigo' (1991), both of which were translated into French and Italian. In 1993, he received the Premio Herralde for his work 'Aves de paso'.
