José Manuel Feio Mena Abrantes is an Angolan writer and playwright born on January 11, 1945, in Malanje. He studied Germanistics in Lisbon and premiered his first play in 1967. After living in Frankfurt from 1970 to 1974 and working at the Municipal Theatres, he returned to Angola to found the Tchinganje theater group, which staged the first play in Angola post-independence in 1975. In 1988, he established Elinga Teatro in Luanda, where he currently serves as director and participates in international theater festivals. He also advises the Angolan president on press issues.
