José Salvador Arias Peñate was a Salvadoran economist, academic researcher, writer, and politician. He earned a doctorate in Economic Sciences from the University of Paris VIII and studied at the London School of Economics. As a political figure, he served as Deputy Minister of Agriculture and was involved with the FMLN during the Salvadoran Civil War. He played a key role in transitioning the FMLN into a legal political party in 1992. Arias authored several books on economics and corruption and passed away from cancer on January 10, 2018.
