Josef Diefenthal was a mid-ranking commander in the Waffen-SS during World War II and a convicted war criminal. Born on October 5, 1915, he became notorious for leading the 3rd Battalion, 2nd SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment during the Ardennes Offensive, for which he received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. Diefenthal was later tried for war crimes related to the Malmedy massacre, where he was found guilty of issuing illegal orders and approving the murder of American POWs. He was sentenced to death, later commuted to life imprisonment, and was released in 1956.
