He served in the Auschwitz-Lagischa subcamp during World War II, acting as a Blockführer. Schmidt was convicted in 1947 in Poland and sentenced to 7 years in prison, which he served fully. He faced trial again in West Germany from September 6, 1977, to February 27, 1981, for the brutal killing of a prisoner, receiving an 8-year juvenile detention sentence, with prior Polish imprisonment counted towards his sentence.
