Josef Starkl II (1929-2005) was an Austrian gardener, rose breeder, and entrepreneur based in the Czech Republic from the 1990s until his death. He owned Austria's first garden center and pioneered self-service sales in nurseries. Starkl specialized in fruit trees, ornamental shrubs, and notably roses. In 1960, he imported a packing machine from the USA that greatly increased rose packaging efficiency. His catalog faced criticism for misleading flower colors and sizes, but his business thrived, especially after his son's takeover in 2005, leading to modernization and awards.
