Stoer is a retired professor at the University of Würzburg, focusing on approximation theory, extrapolation methods, and optimization techniques. He co-authored a well-known textbook, 'Numerical Mathematics', with Roland Bulirsch, which is based on lectures by Friedrich Bauer, first published in 1972/73. Stoer is also a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.
