Josefina Demes was a Brazilian pharmacist, professor, writer, entrepreneur, inventor, and historian born in Syria. She was notable as one of the early Arab immigrants in Floriano and became the first woman to obtain a higher education degree in the region. Demes was a biochemistry pharmacist and is credited by locals with the invention of German schnapps, also known as jalapa tincture. She played a significant role in the education sector in the state of Piauí.
