Josemari Velez de Mendizabal Azkarraga is a Basque writer born on September 27, 1949, in Aramaio, Araba. He moved to Arrasate with his family during childhood. He holds degrees in Business Sciences and Economics and began his personal Basque language learning process while studying. For 20 years, he worked in management positions at Unión Cerrajera. He served as deputy Minister of Culture from 1983 to 1985 and was a founding member of the Euskal Idazleen Elkartea, later becoming its president until 1989. He directed Eusko Ikaskuntza from 1994 to 2010 and retired in 2010.
