Joseph A. Thas is a Belgian mathematician born on October 13, 1944, in Dilbeek, Belgium. He specializes in combinatorics and its applications in geometry, particularly finite geometries. Thas earned his Ph.D. from the University of Ghent in 1969 under Julien Bilo. He is a professor at the same university and has received various awards, including the Euler Medal in 1994. He was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 1998 and is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society. Thas has served as both vice director and director of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium.
