Joseph Lee Bast is an American right-wing political activist and the former president and CEO of The Heartland Institute, a conservative and libertarian public policy think tank based in Illinois. He served in this role until July 2017 when former Congressman Tim Huelskamp succeeded him. Subsequent presidents included Frank Lasee in 2019 and James Taylor in 2020. Bast's work primarily focused on conservative policy initiatives and promoting libertarian principles.
