Joseph Carl Shaw was an American convicted murderer who became the first individual executed in South Carolina following the 1976 reauthorization of capital punishment by the U.S. Supreme Court. He was sentenced to death for the murders of three people in Richland County, South Carolina, committed in 1977. His execution marked a significant moment in the history of the death penalty in the United States. An accomplice, James Terry Roach, was also sentenced to death and executed later in 1986.
