Joseph Edward Smadel was an American physician and virologist born on January 10, 1907, in Vincennes, Indiana, and died on July 21, 1963. He studied at the University of Pennsylvania and received his M.D. from Washington University in 1931. Smadel worked in virology during World War II, notably addressing a typhus epidemic in the Mediterranean. He led research on several diseases and was involved in the National Institutes of Health, becoming the director of its Virology and Rickettsia laboratory until his death. He was recognized with numerous awards, including election to the National Academy of Sciences.
