Joseph F. Dunford, Jr. is a United States Marine Corps General, born on December 8, 1955. He serves as the 19th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and previously held the position of 36th Commandant of the Marine Corps. Early in his career, he led forces in Afghanistan from February 2013 to August 2014 and commanded various units, including the 5th Marine Regiment during the 2003 Iraq invasion. He was confirmed by the Senate as Chairman on July 29, 2015, and became the highest-ranking officer in the U.S. armed forces on September 25, 2015.
