Joseph Jacobus van den Besselaar (1916-1991) was a Dutch classical philologist, Romanist, and Lusitanist who taught in Brazil for several years. He studied Classical Philology at Nijmegen University from 1934 to 1940 and later became a high school teacher. He earned his doctorate in 1945 with his dissertation on Cassiodorus. Van den Besselaar emigrated to Brazil in 1949, where he served as a professor of Ancient History at various universities until returning to the Netherlands in 1961 to teach Portuguese at Nijmegen University.
