Joseph L. Goldstein is an American biochemist and geneticist, born on April 18, 1940. He is a pioneer in the study of cholesterol metabolism and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1985, sharing the honor with his fellow American Michael Stuart Brown. Goldstein obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia in 1962, followed by his first medical degree in 1966 from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School.
