Joseph Mitchell "Yogi" Parsons (1964-1999) was an American convicted of murdering Richard Lynn Ernest in 1987. He hitchhiked with Ernest in California before stabbing him at a Utah rest area. Afterward, Parsons assumed Ernest's identity and maintained this claim during his arrest. Pleading guilty, Parsons failed to substantiate his defense of killing Ernest in self-defense against unwanted advances. He was sentenced to death and chose lethal injection for his execution in 1999, also marking the first use of a newly designed execution chamber in Utah.
