Group Captain Joseph Orji was the first Military Governor of Gombe State, Nigeria from October 1996 until August 1998 during the regime of General Sani Abacha. After the transition to civilian rule in May 1999, he was required to retire, along with other former military governors. Following his military career, Orji became a member of the steering committee of the United Nigeria Development Forum (UNDF), comprised of former military officers committed to nation-building.
