Joseph Paul Jernigan (January 31, 1954 – August 5, 1993) was a Texas murderer executed by lethal injection. In 1981, he was sentenced to death for the stabbing and shooting of 75-year-old Edward Hale, who caught him stealing a microwave. After 12 years in prison, his final appeal was denied. He agreed to donate his body for scientific research, and his remains were processed into 1mm slices for the Visible Human Project, a medical research initiative. This process was also featured in the HBO documentary 'Virtual Corpse.'
