Joseph Polowski (1916-1983) was an American soldier turned anti-war activist. He met Soviet troops on the Elbe River on April 25, 1945, during World War II and vowed to prevent future wars after witnessing the aftermath of artillery fire on civilians. After his military service, he advocated for global peace and commemorated the Elbe meeting annually in Chicago. He met with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev and visited East Germany, all while working as a taxi driver. Polowski passed away in Chicago and was buried in Torgau with military honors.
