Józef Janek Szlajfsztajn, later known as Josef Schleifstein, born on March 7, 1941, is a Polish-born American who survived the Buchenwald concentration camp and the Holocaust at the age of four. His father hid him in a large sack to avoid detection by SS guards, and other inmates assisted in keeping him safe until the camp's liberation by American forces. After World War II, Schleifstein and his parents emigrated to the United States. He refrained from discussing his wartime experiences for decades, even with his children.
