He is notable for his role as co-chairman on the Board of Directors of OutServe-SLDN, advocating for LGBT military personnel. Graduating from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 2009, he worked to end the discrimination against service members due to sexual orientation, previously using the pseudonym JD Smith to protect his identity under the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy. Seefried has been a significant media representative for LGBT issues in the military.
