Joshua Nkomo (June 19, 1917 – July 1, 1999) was a prominent Zimbabwean political leader and the founder of the Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU). He was a labor leader and president of the banned National Democratic Party, imprisoned for ten years by the white Rhodesian government. After his release, he became a key figure in the fight against the regime but faced conflict with rival group ZANU, led by Robert Mugabe. Following a controversial merger between ZAPU and ZANU, Nkomo fled the country due to fears for his life.
