Jostein Goksøyr was a notable Norwegian microbiologist born on June 28, 1922, in Kopervik. He earned his dr.philos. degree in 1955 and began his career as a lecturer at the University of Bergen in 1956, later becoming a professor from 1966 until 1989. Goksøyr was a distinguished member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters since 1970 and joined the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala in 1987. A planctomycete bacterium, Bythopirellula goksoyri, was named in his honor, illustrating his contributions to microbiology.
