Joycelyn Elders is an American pediatrician and public health official, born on August 13, 1933. She served as a rear admiral in the United States Public Health Service and made history as the first African American appointed as U.S. Surgeon General. Elders is known for her candid discussions on controversial topics, including drug legalization, masturbation, and the distribution of contraceptives in schools. Her tenure ended in December 1994 after a scandal surrounding her remarks. Currently, she serves as a professor of pediatrics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
