He was indicted for operating major smuggling rings and was implicated in the kidnapping and murder of DEA agent Enrique Camarena. After his arrest in 1988, he faced trials, resulting in a guilty verdict for drug smuggling and involvement in the kidnapping. However, his conviction was overturned in 2017, and charges were dropped in 2018, yet he remains incarcerated for drug offenses.
