Initially a physical education teacher, he began his television career in 1961 as a freelance reporter and became a permanent commentator for Yleisradio from 1979 to 1993. Known for his unique commentary style, he covered significant sports events, including the 1982 Monaco Grand Prix and numerous others. He gained fame for his coverage of the Finnish Jukola relay and Wimbledon. Jokinen lived part of the year in Spain and was the father of film director Antti J. Jokinen.
