Since 2001, he has served as the Secretary General of Suomen Liikunta ja Urheilu SLU ry. He led the High-Performance Sports Reform Group starting in September 2010, with their final report released in December 2012. Pekkala's personal best in pole vault is 5.15 meters, achieved in 1981. He has received military merit and a badge of honor from the Ministry of Education and Culture in 2007 and 2008 respectively.
