Jukka Salmela is a former Finnish speed skater, born on December 30, 1958, in Kangasala, Pirkanmaa. He was a specialist in sprints, winning a silver medal at the Finnish Sprint Championships in 1979. Salmela qualified for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, where he placed 18th in the 500 meters and 30th in the 1000 meters. He made history by becoming the first speed skater to break the 37-second mark in the 500 meters in March 1980. After retiring, he became a music teacher and is a singer in bands.
