He shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1970 with Uhler and Katz for his research on the release and reuptake of catecholamine neurotransmitters, which include adrenaline and norepinephrine, and he later discovered dopamine. Axelrod also made significant contributions to understanding the pineal gland and its regulation during sleep-wake cycles.
