Julius Kambarage Nyerere was the first elected leader of Tanzania after its independence in December 1961. He oversaw the unification of Zanzibar and the mainland following a coup. Nyerere implemented 'ujamaa' policies focused on agricultural collectivization and nationalization, which, while ambitious, faced mixed results. He supported anti-colonial movements across Southern Africa and led Tanzania during a conflict with Uganda, resulting in the fall of Idi Amin. Nyerere retired in 1985, leaving a legacy of active involvement in regional issues and diplomacy, particularly in Burundi, and was affectionately called Mwalimu, meaning 'teacher'.
