He achieved recognition after winning the first Kondrashin International Conducting Competition in 1984. Hirokami has held esteemed positions, including Chief Conductor of the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor for various orchestras. He became the Music Director of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra in 2006, navigating challenges during a financial crisis, before being dismissed in 2008. He is currently the Chief Conductor of the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra.
