A U.S. Air Force veteran and aerial photographer during the Korean War, he later served in the Minnesota House of Representatives as a Republican from 1977 to 1990. McDonald was mayor of Watertown from 2005 until his passing on October 4, 2012, due to a brain tumor. His legacy continues through his son Joe, who is active in the Minnesota Legislature.
