Kamla Persad-Bissessar is a Trinidadian politician born on April 22, 1952, in Siparia. She made history in 2010 by becoming the first female Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago after her party, the United National Congress, won the elections. She served in this role until 2015, when she was succeeded by Keith Rowley. Additionally, Kamla is the second individual of Indian descent and Hinduism to hold the Prime Minister position after Basdeo Panday. Following her tenure, she became the Leader of the Opposition and served as Chair of the Commonwealth from 2010 to 2012.
