Karekin I, born Nishan Sarkisian on August 27, 1932, in Qsbi, Syria, is known for his leadership as the Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia based in Antelias, Lebanon from 1983 to 1994. During this period, he was referred to as Karekin II. In 1994, he was elected as the Catholicos of All Armenians, head of the Armenian Apostolic Church, succeeding Vazgen I. Prior to these roles, he served as a bishop and patriarchal representative for Eastern United States Armenian Orthodox in 1973 and later as assistant Catholicos from 1977.
