A trained teacher, she worked in local schools until 1978 and then served as a municipal councilor. During her tenure as mayor, she focused on maintaining Stavanger's status as an 'oil capital' and overseeing development projects. After leaving the mayoral office, she became the director of tourism for Rogaland in 1990.
