Born on December 3, 1912, he commissioned U-121 on May 28, 1940, serving as its first commanding officer. During his tenure, U-121 was primarily a training vessel and did not see combat. He later commanded U-752, achieving the sinking of eight ships totaling 33,492 GRT, until its sinking led to his death on May 23, 1943.
