Karl-Heinz Mehlan was a German social hygienist born on July 18, 1916, in Krimnitz. He earned his medical doctorate in 1944 and contributed significantly to social hygiene after joining the Humboldt University of Berlin in 1951. He established the Institute for Social Hygiene at the University of Rostock, becoming its director in 1956. Mehlan advocated for the legalization of abortion in East Germany, leading to the 1972 law on pregnancy interruption. He also initiated family counseling, established the first condom factory in the country, and introduced the 'Wunschkindpille' in 1965.
