Karl-Heinz Schmidt (born October 5, 1924) is a German ophthalmologist, inventor, and counterfeiter. He is known for creating the 'Schmidt Hammer', used for concrete testing. Along with his sister Ilona Eva Hausmann, he gained notoriety in the late 1950s for counterfeiting Reich gold coins, which they sold as legal tender until their arrest in 1963. Upon conviction for fraud, they received suspended sentences and fines. Despite legal actions, they had circulated over 100,000 counterfeit coins, affecting even banks who sold them as investment gold until new laws were enacted in 1975.
