Karl Umrigar was a renowned Indian jockey born on October 4, 1960. He achieved fame in the 1970s, becoming a notable figure at just 17 years old. In the 1978-79 Mahalaxmi racing season, he rode 144 mounts and secured 54 victories. He was the recipient of the Karl Umrigar Trophy, which is awarded annually in his memory. Tragically, he suffered a fatal accident at the racetrack when he was thrown off a horse named Vasudha and died on May 3, 1979, after slipping into a coma.
