Kate Spade, born Katherine Noel Brosnahan on December 24, 1962, was an American fashion designer and businesswoman known for founding Kate Spade New York. After working in the accessories department of Mademoiselle magazine, she launched a handbag business with her husband Andy Spade in 1993. Their bags, celebrated for their elegance and affordability, became emblematic of New York City in the 1990s. Spade sold a majority stake in her brand in 1999 and exited completely in 2006, later launching a new brand, Frances Valentine, in 2016.
