She relocated to Anchorage, Alaska, with her family and graduated from Palmer High School in 1937. Poland was active in politics after being appointed to the Alaska Senate in 1970 following her husband's resignation. A Democrat, she served in the Senate until 1978. She lived in Kodiak, Alaska, and worked as a bookkeeper prior to her political career. Poland passed away on September 3, 2010, in Anchorage, Alaska.
